Who Will Lead South Korea After The Martial Law Turmoil?

South Koreans are voting to elect a new president following six months of political unrest sparked by ex-leader Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law attempt. The election aims to restore stability and revive the economy, which faces challenges from U.S. protectionist policies.

Voter turnout is expected to be high, with over a third of the 44.39 million eligible voters casting early ballots. Leading candidates Lee Jae-myung (liberal) and Kim Moon-soo (conservative) have pledged reforms, focusing on economic innovation and social equity versus business deregulation.

The martial law controversy overshadows the race, with Lee accusing Kim and his party of supporting Yoon’s failed attempt, while Kim warns of Lee’s authoritarian tendencies. Polls favor Lee with a 14-point lead.

Exit polls will be released after voting closes at 8 p.m., with official results certified on Wednesday. The winner will be inaugurated shortly after, filling the vacant presidency following Yoon’s impeachment and removal in April.
