Why Did Donald Trump Raise Steel And Aluminium Tariffs To 50%?

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an increase in import tariffs on steel and aluminium from 25% to 50%, aiming to strengthen the domestic steel industry. At a rally in Pittsburgh, he highlighted that the decision aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing, cut dependence on Chinese imports, and safeguard U.S. jobs.

Trump also revealed a planned $14 billion investment in the U.S. steel sector and mentioned an agreement with Japan’s Nippon Steel, though final approval is pending. He assured that there would be no layoffs or outsourcing and promised a $5,000 bonus for steel workers.

The decision builds on his earlier 2018 tariff hike and is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the American steel industry.
