Ottawa, Canada:Ruby Dhalla, a former Canadian Member of Parliament of Indian descent, is running to become Canada’s first woman of color to hold the office of prime minister. Her campaign focuses on addressing issues such as illegal immigration and human trafficking while proposing practical solutions to the challenges faced by Canadians. Dhalla aims to engage new groups in politics and is vying for the position of leader of the Liberal Party, with elections for the new leader set for March 9.
Dhalla has officially declared her intention to succeed Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party, a position that could ultimately lead to the prime ministership if the party wins the next federal election.
In a campaign video shared on X, Dhalla expressed heartfelt thanks for the support she’s received so far, saying, "Thank you so much, thank you to God, I am so grateful to all of you. We are on the verge of making history by electing the first woman of color as the leader of the Liberal Party and Canada’s next prime minister."
She shared her excitement about the initial phase of her campaign, noting her next steps: "Phase 1 is done, and now we move to phase 2. I will be engaging with Liberals across the country who have signed up as party members. I'm thrilled to be officially accepted as a candidate by the Liberal Party, and I believe my candidacy will bring a new demographic into our party and into Canadian politics."
Her campaign team has highlighted her historical significance, noting that Dhalla was the first woman of Indian origin to be elected as an MP for three terms and is now working toward becoming Canada’s first prime minister of color.
Dhalla shared her vision for the country, saying, "I’m committed to standing up for Canadians and fighting for Canada’s future. As leader, I will return the party to its members and refocus it toward practical solutions for the challenges facing Canadians. If you’re looking for real change from a leader who isn’t tied to the current administration and has the potential to challenge the system, then join the Liberal Party and support me."
While Dhalla’s path to victory faces tough competition from well-known figures like former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, she remains determined to make history.
Originally from Winnipeg and later moving to Ontario, Dhalla began her career as a chiropractor before entering politics during Paul Martin’s time as prime minister. She identifies as a "self-made businesswoman and entrepreneur" with a deep commitment to the Liberal Party and Canada’s future.
The Liberal Party’s new leader will become the prime minister if the party wins the upcoming federal elections. The new leader will be announced on March 9, as reported by the Brampton Guardian.
