Dr. Sunanda Nair Honored with Prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award

Houston, Texas, USA:  Kerala-born Mohiniattam dancer, choreographer and educator Dr. Sunanda Nair has been honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, India's highest national recognition for excellence in the performing arts.

The Consulate General of India in Houston congratulated Dr. Nair following the announcement of the award, recognizing her decades-long commitment to preserving, promoting and teaching Mohiniattam, one of Kerala's most celebrated classical dance traditions.

Presented by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, the award is regarded as the country's foremost honor in the performing arts. Established in 1952, it recognizes artists who have made exceptional and sustained contributions to India's cultural heritage.

Dr. Nair is widely respected as a performer, choreographer, scholar and educator. Over the years, she has played a significant role in expanding the reach of Mohiniattam beyond India through performances, workshops, lecture demonstrations and mentorship programs conducted across the world.

Her efforts have helped introduce new audiences to the classical dance form while ensuring that its traditional techniques and artistic values are preserved for future generations.
