Oscars 2025 Under Threat: LA Wildfires Could Lead to First-Ever Cancellation

California, USA: The iconic Oscars ceremony is facing an unprecedented challenge as the devastating Los Angeles wildfires threaten to disrupt the event. For the first time in its 96-year history, the prestigious awards could be canceled due to the ongoing destruction and tragic loss of life caused by the fires.

Could the Oscars 2025 Be Called Off?

According to The Sun, discussions within the Academy are leaning toward a potential cancellation. An insider revealed that the leadership is deeply concerned about the optics of hosting a celebratory event while the community grapples with immense pain and suffering. “Even if the fires are brought under control soon, the emotional and physical toll on the city will persist for months,” the source explained. The focus, they said, should shift toward supporting recovery efforts and fundraising initiatives when appropriate.

Backup Plan in Motion

In the past, even during the global lockdown in 2021, the Oscars were postponed by two months rather than canceled outright. This time, however, the severity of the situation has prompted the Academy to activate a confidential contingency plan. The last time such measures were considered was in the aftermath of 9/11.

Stars like Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg are closely monitoring the situation along with the Academy’s leadership to determine the fate of this year’s ceremony.

Luxuries Under Scrutiny

If the Oscars do proceed as planned, major changes are expected. The customary goody bags, previously valued at £140,000 ($171,000) and filled with extravagant items like Swiss Alps getaways, high-end beauty products, and luxury grills, have been deemed inappropriate under the current circumstances. Board members have reportedly decided to forgo these gifts, considering them “in poor taste.”

Nomination Adjustments Amid Crisis

The Academy has already extended the nomination voting period to January 17, with nominees to be announced virtually on January 23. Meanwhile, the wildfires continue to devastate the region, destroying the homes of celebrities like Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton. Tragically, 25 lives have been lost so far, with officials fearing the toll may rise as recovery efforts progress.
