Enhanced Parking Permit System Improves Accessibility and Efficiency

Beginning July 1, the Marine Parking Garage (MPG) and Downtown Transit Center (DTC) in Juneau will implement a new parking permit system, marking a significant upgrade in the city's parking infrastructure. This update introduces License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, replacing physical permits with virtual ones linked to vehicle license plates. This advancement aims to streamline permit management and enhance monitoring of parking occupancy levels, ensuring efficient use of both facilities.

The new system offers increased convenience by allowing up to three vehicles to share a single permit, with only one vehicle accessing the garage at any time. Permit management, including adding or removing vehicles, can be easily done online, eliminating the need for traditional hangtags. Annual and monthly permits can be securely purchased and managed online using credit/debit cards at juneau.thepermitportal.com, or through cash or check at the Parks & Recreation office at City Hall.

The MPG will soon add four additional hourly parking spaces to meet growing demand. Operating hours remain unchanged, requiring permits or payment from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with specific regulations for EV and ADA-designated spaces. Library patrons can receive up to two hours of free parking in designated spaces with validation from library staff. Hourly parking is available on the ground floor of the MPG, as well as in designated lots.

For those interested in obtaining permits, it's advised to act quickly as availability is currently limited, with interested parties encouraged to contact (907) 586-5226 to join the waitlist for both garages.
