The Texas Panhandle fire has burned 10 million acres

The wildfires in the Texas Panhandle, USA, have reached unprecedented levels of intensity. The Smoke House Creek fire, the largest among them, has engulfed nearly 10 lakh acres of trees, fields, and houses. This marks the most substantial fire in the state since 1980 when the recording of fire intensity began. The situation is not expected to improve as dry weather conditions persist into Friday.

Satellite images vividly depict the extent of these wildfires. By Thursday evening, an additional 31,500 acres in the neighboring state of Oklahoma had also succumbed to the flames, prompting a state of emergency. Collectively, the wildfires across Texas have consumed 2,000 square kilometers, equivalent to the area of the US state of Delaware. Authorities report that two individuals have lost their lives in the Smoke House Creek fire.

The North Power Electric Co-operative has announced a halt in power supply to the affected area, necessitating the restoration of approximately 115 miles of power lines. The Hemphill area witnessed significant destruction, with about 4,00,000 acres affected and numerous houses burnt. The fire has also claimed the lives of thousands of cattle, with approximately 85 percent of the state's cattle located in the Panhandle region.

Meanwhile, the Windy Ducie Fire, Grapevine Fire, and Magenta Fire have caused substantial damage. Historical sites in the Turkey Track Wrench area have suffered severe destruction as well.
