Israel has resumed its diplomatic presence in Paraguay after a six-year break, marking a significant development in their bilateral relations. The official reopening of the Israeli embassy in Asunción occurred on Wednesday and was attended by high-profile representatives from both nations, including Paraguay's President Santiago Peña and Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.

The ceremony also featured Paraguay’s Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano among other notable figures. The embassy had been closed since 2018 following a controversial move by then-President Mario Abdo Benítez, who shifted Paraguay’s embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv. This decision led to Israel's retaliatory closure of its embassy in Paraguay. The reopening symbolizes resolving this diplomatic rift and paves the way for improved relations.

During the ceremony, President Peña expressed optimism about the future of Israel-Paraguay relations, noting the strong foundation of their partnership and the potential for collaborative success. He also announced plans to move Paraguay’s embassy back to Jerusalem in December.
