Islamabad (Pakistan), August 17: Pakistan is facing ongoing severe internet issues, including slow speeds, prompting the government to propose the implementation of a nationwide firewall. This development has raised considerable concern from the Pakistan Software Houses Association (PSHA), as reported by ARY News.

Khurram Rahat, Vice Chairman of PSHA, stated that recent internet disruptions have resulted in an estimated USD 300 million loss for the country’s IT sector. Rahat expressed worries that the firewall’s design and objectives might jeopardize client data security and emphasized that the installation should not involve an internet shutdown, noting the negative impact of internet slowdowns on the industry.

In response to these concerns, Hamid Mir, a leading journalist with a private news channel, has filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court. Represented by his lawyer, Imaan Mazari, Mir argued that the firewall could significantly reduce internet speeds, negatively affecting the youth who are vital to Pakistan’s digital economy. He also contended that the installation might infringe on the fundamental rights of Pakistani citizens.

The petition calls for a comprehensive report from key respondents, including the Cabinet Secretary, IT Secretary, Interior Secretary, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and the Ministry of Human Rights, regarding the firewall's implications and installation process.

Senator Afnanullah Khan noted that ongoing internet disruptions have already led to losses of USD 500 million for freelancers and digital agencies, severely impacting the Pakistani economy, as reported by ARY News. On Thursday, users reported difficulties accessing social media platforms like WhatsApp. Downdetector, which tracks real-time internet outages, observed a spike in complaints about disruptions to WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram between noon and 1 p.m. Furthermore, internet service providers such as PTCL, Zong, and Nayatel experienced service interruptions.

Senator Afnanullah Khan also warned that unresolved internet issues could exacerbate the economic downturn, potentially leading to a significant decline in IT sector exports.
