PDP and Peoples Conference Slam Jammu Kashmir Governments Statehood Resolution

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the People's Conference expressed serious concerns over a recent resolution by the Jammu and Kashmir government calling for the restoration of the region's statehood. The PDP described the resolution as a "huge setback," criticizing it for not addressing the restoration of Article 370, which was revoked in August 2019. PDP youth president Waheed Parra stated that the resolution essentially ratifies the 2019 decision and dilutes their demand, especially given that they campaigned on restoring Article 370.

Reports from the Jammu-based newspaper Daily Excelsior indicated that the cabinet passed the resolution, with the chief minister expected to present it to Prime Minister Modi. However, this has not been officially confirmed.

Sajad Lone, the leader of the People's Conference, also raised questions about the resolution's secrecy and argued that such matters should be discussed in the Assembly, where the people's will is represented. He pointed out that a past resolution on autonomy was passed by the Assembly, questioning why this one was not reserved for the same. Lone urged the National Conference to honor its election promises regarding Articles 370 and 35A and the restoration of statehood, emphasizing that they expect fulfillment of these commitments.
