US Marathi Mothers Celebrate Makar Sankranti in Bay Area with Ashvini Bhave

San Francisco, California, USA: A U.S.-based nonprofit of Marathi mothers celebrated Makar Sankranti with a sold-out cultural gathering in California’s Bay Area, blending tradition, conversation, and community bonding. Indian film actor Ashvini Bhave attended the programme as the chief guest.

The Haldi-Kunku event, organised by MAI (Marathi Aai Initiative) through its Bay Area chapter on January 11, brought together over 100 women. According to a media statement issued on January 18, the evening focused on cultural roots, motherhood, and shared experiences within the Indian diaspora.

Guests were welcomed with traditional haldi-kunku rituals and a ceremonial vaan sourced from India, while the venue decor recreated the feel of a traditional Marathi courtyard. The highlight was an informal, moderated interaction with Bhave, who spoke about motherhood, staying connected to Marathi traditions, and raising children in a multicultural environment.

The programme also featured a fashion presentation with attendees showcasing black sarees in classic and contemporary styles, followed by a community-style dinner and interactions. MAI said the event reflected its mission to preserve culture through shared, lived experiences among Marathi mothers across the United States.
