What to Expect from PM Modi at the 16th BRICS Summit in Russia?

This year's BRICS summit, themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi heading to Russia next week for the 16th BRICS Summit, taking place on October 22-23 in Kazan. Hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the summit will convene leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to address urgent global challenges and enhance cooperation among BRICS nations.

The summit's theme emphasizes the importance of fostering international collaboration and tackling issues related to global governance. The external affairs ministry stated that "the Summit will serve as a crucial platform to assess the advancements made through BRICS initiatives and to identify possible opportunities for future collaboration."

This visit marks Modi's second trip to Russia this year, following his earlier journey to Moscow in July.

The BRICS group derives its name from the initial letters of its founding members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—who came together in 2009. The group has since broadened its scope to include countries from the Middle East, such as Iran.
