Rishi Sunak Trades Politics for Cricket During Mumbai Visit, Celebrates His Roots

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: Rishi Sunak shared on X (formerly Twitter) that every visit to Mumbai should include a game of tennis ball cricket."

During his ongoing trip to India, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has embraced his Indian heritage, literature, and cricket. After attending the Jaipur Literature Festival on February 1, Sunak headed to Mumbai, where he participated in a beloved local tradition—playing tennis-ball cricket at Parsee Gymkhana.

This visit to Mumbai followed Sunak's appearance at the Jaipur Literature Festival, where his wife, Akshata Murty, joined her mother, author and philanthropist Sudha Murty, on stage.

Before heading to the Cricket Club of India (CCI) at Churchgate for breakfast, Sunak posted, “No trip to Mumbai would be complete without a game of tennis ball cricket” on his social media. On February 2, he attended the India-England T20 match at Wankhede Stadium with his father-in-law, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy.

After England's loss, Sunak posted a selfie on Instagram, offering words of encouragement for the team. "A tough day for England at the Wankhede, but I’m confident our team will bounce back. Congratulations to Team India on the win," he wrote.

Sunak, whose parents are of Indian descent and emigrated to the UK from East Africa, made history as the youngest British prime minister in over 200 years. His term ended in November 2024 after the Labour Party secured a decisive victory, but he remains a Conservative MP.

Duke of Edinburgh Attends Wankhede T20 Match

Also present at the T20 match was Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh. During his visit, the Duke met both team captains and interacted with young winners of the International Award for Young People (IAYP), India's version of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

Founded in 1956 by Prince Edward’s late father, Prince Philip, the award promotes non-formal education and skill development for youth. The Duke’s three-day visit to India focuses on strengthening UK-India relations and highlighting the positive impact of the award program.
