Indio, California, USA: A moderate earthquake shook parts of Southern California late Monday night, with its epicenter near Indio. The seismic activity was recorded just before 9 p.m. EDT at a shallow depth of around 3 kilometers.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured 4.9 in magnitude and originated roughly 19 kilometers north-northeast of Indio, California. The shaking was experienced across several areas in Southern California, including San Diego, Palm Springs, Temecula, and Riverside.
Initial data had placed the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.1, but later assessments led the USGS to revise the strength downward to 4.9.
Following the tremor, residents from various parts of the state turned to social media to describe their experiences. Many reported noticeable shaking and movement in buildings.
One user on X shared that they felt their apartment sway in Orange, California, asking others where they experienced the quake. Another resident from Twentynine Palms said the shaking felt intense and noted that an emergency alert arrived only after the earthquake had already occurred.
