He has announced that he is stepping down with immediate effect as the head of Fine Gael, the centre-right party that is a partner in the Irish government. The Prime Minister will step down after the party leadership contest. He said that there are personal and political reasons for his resignation. He said that he has no plans yet. He said that he would continue as an MP sitting on the back benches in Parliament. Leo has served as Prime Minister twice so far. He assumed the post of Prime Minister once between 2017-2020 and for the second time in December 2022.

Leo Varadkar's mother is Irish and his father is Indian. Leo, who played a key role in legalizing same-sex marriage in 2015, overturned the abortion ban. Leo said in his resignation statement that he is proud to have made the country more equal and more modern. Leo is facing serious dissension in the party.
