Middle East Tensions Rise as Harris Mulls Shapiro for VP

Washington: US VP Kamala Harris Interviews VP Candidates Amid Controversy

As US Vice President Kamala Harris interviews top candidates for her running mate, some Democratic progressives are expressing concerns about Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro due to his pro-Israel stance on the Middle East conflict. Critics, including pro-Palestinian activists and progressive groups, argue that Shapiro's support for Israel and his handling of Gaza-related protests are problematic. Additionally, Shapiro's approach to a sexual harassment complaint and his advocacy for school voucher programs have drawn criticism from labor groups like the United Auto Workers (UAW).

Despite this, Shapiro's defenders argue that his Jewish identity is fueling some of the criticism, with Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz suggesting that the attacks on Shapiro are divisive. Shapiro has voiced criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and acknowledged the suffering in Gaza, complicating the narrative around his foreign policy stance.

Harris is evaluating several other candidates as well, such as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Walz, a progressive favorite, faces criticism over his age, while Kelly and Shapiro are under scrutiny from labor groups.

The final decision on Harris' running mate is expected soon, as she prepares for her campaign against Donald Trump following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race. The choice will have significant implications for the future direction of the Democratic Party and the upcoming election.
