Birmingham, United Kingdom: Radhika Balakrishnan has become the first Carnatic vocalist to receive an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC), one of the United Kingdom's leading performing arts institutions. The honour recognizes her outstanding contributions as a Carnatic vocalist, educator, and academic in promoting Indian classical music globally.
Based in Bengaluru, Balakrishnan has over 15 years of experience in performing and teaching Carnatic music. She served as the inaugural ICCR Chair in Indian Studies at Birmingham City University in 2023 and later continued her association with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire as a Visiting Artist and Professor, helping expand the study of Indian classical music.
RBC Principal Stephen Maddock said the fellowship acknowledges her achievements in music and education, while Vice Principal Shirley Thompson praised her lasting impact on the institution. Accepting the honour, Balakrishnan said the recognition reflects the growing international appreciation of Indian classical music and its role in strengthening global cultural exchange.
