UN Urges Action on Libya Central Bank Crisis and Oil Field Closure

Libya, Tripoli: Late Monday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued a statement expressing serious concern about the worsening situation in Libya due to unilateral decisions.

Fears have arisen over the potential misuse of Libya’s financial resources amid disputes regarding control of the Central Bank of Libya.

The statement from UNSMIL announced that an emergency meeting would be convened with all parties involved in the Central Bank crisis to reach a resolution based on political agreements, relevant laws, and the principle of the bank’s independence.

The UN mission has called for the suspension of unilateral actions, the lifting of force majeure on oil fields, the cessation of escalations and use of force, and the safeguarding of Central Bank employees.

Libya's economy relies heavily on oil revenue, and recent moves to impose force majeure on oil fields have effectively cut off the country’s main income source.

Earlier on Monday, the administration based in eastern Libya ordered the closure of oil fields in the region, which are responsible for nearly all of the country’s oil production. This action halted both production and exports amid escalating tensions over the Central Bank’s leadership.

There has been no confirmation from the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli or the National Oil Corp (NOC), which manages the country’s oil resources.
