Climate Activists Halt Traffic at Frankfurt Airport

Germany, Frankfurt Main: Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, faced a temporary suspension of flights on Thursday due to environmental activists breaching the airport's perimeter. The disruption, occurring at the peak of the summer holiday season, halted traffic for two hours before the first runway resumed operations. Passengers were advised to check flight statuses as normal operations were being restored. The activists, from the climate group Letzte Generation (Last Generation), used pincers to cut through the wire fence and reached various points around the runways, advocating for a binding international agreement to end the use of fossil fuels by 2030.

This protest was part of a broader series of actions at multiple European airports. On Wednesday, Letzte Generation activists disrupted Cologne-Bonn airport traffic for hours by gluing themselves to the tarmac, and similar arrests occurred at London's Heathrow airport. The A22 Network, which includes Letzte Generation, is committed to non-violent climate protests and plans further disruptions at airports in Britain, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada, the United States, and Norway. These actions highlight the group's controversial tactics, which have included high-profile protests like throwing mashed potatoes at museum paintings and gluing themselves to busy roads.

Letzte Generation's spokeswoman, Lisa Johnson, emphasized the urgent need for politicians to address climate issues instead of imposing tougher sentences on protesters. She warned that prison sentences would not protect against climate-related disasters such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and rising sea levels. The group announced plans to protest against proposed government subsidies for Kassel-Calden airport starting September 25, reinforcing their commitment to drawing attention to climate change and pushing for substantial policy changes.
