Indian-Origin Economist Sandeep Mazumder Appointed President of Berry College

Rome, Georgia: Sandeep Mazumder, currently the dean of Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business since 2021, has been selected as the next president of Berry College. He will officially step into the role on July 1, 2025, following the tenure of current president Steve Briggs.

Mazumder, an Indian-origin economist, was chosen by the Berry College Board of Trustees for his extensive academic leadership. Before his role at Baylor, he served as professor and head of the economics department at Wake Forest University.

Mazumder’s academic focus includes macroeconomics, monetary policy, international monetary economics, and time-series econometrics, with much of his research centered on U.S. inflation and the Phillips Curve. His contributions include over 30 journal articles in prestigious publications such as the *Journal of Economic Literature*, the *Brookings Papers on Economic Activity*, and the *Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking*. In 2022, he also co-authored the textbook *Money, Banking, and Financial Markets: A Modern Introduction to Macroeconomics*.

John Coleman, chair of the search committee, highlighted Mazumder’s leadership and vision as distinguishing qualities in a competitive field of over 175 candidates. "Dr. Mazumder's insight into economics, along with his strategic leadership, made him stand out," Coleman remarked.

Rick Gilbert, chair of Berry College’s Board of Trustees, expressed confidence in Mazumder’s alignment with the institution’s mission to develop leaders grounded in intellect, integrity, and compassion. "Dr. Mazumder shares Berry's commitment to nurturing both the mind and character," Gilbert said.

Mazumder will collaborate closely with Berry’s faculty and outgoing president Briggs to ensure a smooth transition into his new role.
