Nigeria Massive Protests Demand Action on Living Costs, Security

Nigeria Massive Protests: Thousands of Nigerians have been protesting nationwide since Thursday, inspired by recent demonstrations in Kenya. The protests, planned for ten days, demand that the government address high living costs, state neglect, and deteriorating security. Protesters are calling for the reversal of economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu last year, including improvements in electricity access, which affects nearly half of Nigeria’s population.

The government has attempted to discourage protests through broadcasts warning of potential violence and unrest. Amnesty International reports that at least 13 protesters have been killed by security forces, and there have been widespread internet disruptions, which many believe are due to deliberate blockades rather than vandalism.

In response to the unrest, President Tinubu has urged protesters to halt demonstrations and engage in dialogue. He defended his economic reforms, including debt reduction and increased minimum wages, but critics argue that these measures have worsened poverty and insecurity, particularly in the north, where Boko Haram has intensified attacks.

Despite foreign investment support for Tinubu’s reforms, there is significant discontent over the rapid pace of changes and the perception of increased political cronyism. In contrast, Kenyan protests last month led to policy changes, including tax hikes being abandoned and cabinet reductions. Similarly, Nigerian protesters are calling for cuts to cabinet salaries and a focus on tackling corruption.

Security forces have responded with tear gas and curfews in several cities, leading to arrests and clashes, particularly in the northern state of Kano. The protests reflect broader frustration across Africa with unaccountable governments and high unemployment rates among the continent’s young population.
