Who Is Amish Doshi? Meet Queens First Indian American Civil Court Judge

New York, USA: Amish Doshi, a tax attorney and certified public accountant who migrated to Queens from India during his childhood, has made history as the first Indian American man to become a Civil Court Judge in Queens.

The ceremonial induction took place in the courtroom where Doshi will preside, with an audience that includes his colleagues from the judiciary, elected officials, community leaders, friends, and family members.

“I can’t put into words the immense honor and humility I feel standing before you as a judge of the New York City Civil Court,” Doshi shared with Queens Daily Eagle. “If someone had told me back in 1982, when I first arrived in this country at the age of 10, that one day I’d become the first South Asian man elected as a judge in Queens, I would have thought they were out of their mind.”

Doshi’s professional journey is marked by excellence in law and finance. Though he was initially nominated for the role before the 2024 Democratic primary, he was not elected. However, a recent law expanding the Civil Court’s bench created another opportunity for Doshi, leading to his successful election in November 2024.

In a heartfelt Instagram message, Doshi thanked his supporters and expressed his enthusiasm for the role. “I’m deeply grateful for the support I’ve received. It’s an honor to serve the people of Queens as their Civil Court Judge,” he wrote.

During his campaign, Doshi emphasized the critical role of Civil Court in addressing everyday legal challenges that deeply affect people’s lives. “Many individuals step off at the Sutphin Blvd train stop to resolve legal issues that could significantly impact their families and livelihoods. That responsibility isn’t lost on me,” he explained. “With over 25 years of experience as both an attorney and CPA, I am fully prepared to serve the residents of Queens.”

Doshi also highlighted the importance of ensuring fairness in cases often involving disputes under $50,000—an amount that can mean everything to some New Yorkers. “For the wealthiest among us, that might not seem like much, but for many New Yorkers, it’s a life-changing sum. It’s crucial that we handle these cases with care, listen attentively, and ensure that we’re making the right decisions,” he said.

Doshi’s historic appointment represents a milestone for Queens, reflecting the borough’s rich diversity and strengthening representation in its judiciary. His election not only showcases his legal and financial expertise but also underscores the importance of representation and community engagement in public service.
