London, UK: Dr. M Mohapatra, famously referred to as the 'Cyclone Man of India,' is an internationally acclaimed meteorologist with more than three decades of expertise in weather science.

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, who serves as the Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has been awarded the 2025 Outstanding Service Award by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). This prestigious recognition celebrates his remarkable leadership in advancing tropical cyclone forecasting and warning systems across the Indian Ocean region.

The India Meteorological Department shared the announcement on X on January 23, stating:

"The India Meteorological Department congratulates Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, on being honored with the Scientific and Technological Activities Commission Outstanding Service Award, 2025, by the American Meteorological Society for his exceptional leadership in enhancing tropical cyclone prediction and warning systems in the Indian Ocean region."

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is a leading U.S.-based organization committed to fostering progress in atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences.

Born in Odisha, Dr. Mohapatra holds a Ph.D. in Physics and is widely regarded as a pioneer in cyclone forecasting and weather prediction. Over his 30-year career, he has authored numerous research papers and has been the recipient of several accolades, including the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in 2022.

Dr. Mohapatra also represents India as its Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and currently serves as the WMO's third vice-president.

His visionary leadership in meteorology has solidified his reputation as the 'Cyclone Man of India.' His contributions have not only improved cyclone prediction in the Indian Ocean but have also elevated global capabilities in severe weather forecasting and meteorological development.
