530 Families Displaced by Floods in Jur River County

Sudan, Jur River Country: Over 530 households in Jur River County's Marial-Bai Payam have been displaced due to severe flooding caused by relentless rains that have battered the region since last month.

Residents report that the floods have not only destroyed their homes but also severely impacted their crops and livestock. Many blame the flooding on a road construction project carried out by the African Resource Company (ARC), which they claim blocked natural water channels by failing to install necessary culverts.

Speaking from Maluil Boma, resident Joseph Manok expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation. "The number of collapsing homes is increasing, and the condition of those affected is worsening as crops are also being destroyed," Manok said.

He urged ARC to create channels that would allow water to flow away from the flooded areas.

Residents are also appealing to humanitarian organizations and the State Government for assistance, particularly with mosquito nets and healthcare supplies.

The most affected areas include Maluil, Kwaj-Ayok, Madhuk, Kuol-Khor, and Akacyic.

Atong Thiep, another resident, highlighted the dire conditions, noting that many households have been devastated and children are falling ill from exposure to the cold. "All the houses have been destroyed. We are constantly watching over our children because they are at risk of drowning," Thiep added.

Western Bahr el-Ghazal Agriculture Minister Valentino Akec, who recently visited the region, confirmed the severe impact of the floods. He mentioned that within two weeks, his ministry, along with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), would assess the situation to determine the necessary aid.

The Minister also assured that the State Government is committed to providing relief to those affected and will hold discussions with the construction company to address the root cause of the flooding.
