Diplomatic Crisis: India Rejects Canadas Nijjar Evidence Claims

Diplomatic Tensions Between India and Canada

The diplomatic row between India and Canada has intensified over the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year. Canada claims to have shared credible evidence of Indian involvement in the case, which India has vehemently denied, stating that no specific details were provided and accusing Canada of making vague accusations.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned that he had briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the need for discussions between their national security advisors but reported that no progress was made. In response to Canada's claims, Indian sources criticized Trudeau's remarks as repetitive and lacking substance.

In retaliation for the allegations, India expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its High Commissioner from Canada. Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly indicated that further actions against India could be considered, emphasizing that expelling diplomats is a significant diplomatic measure.

Trudeau reiterated statements from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about Indian government agents engaging in activities threatening public safety. He asserted that Canadian officials had provided evidence implicating six Indian agents in criminal activities, but Indian officials countered that they were not given specifics or accountability regarding these claims.

As the diplomatic conflict escalates, it has affected the processing times for visas for Indian students and professionals in Canada due to staff shortages at missions. The situation has drawn international attention, with other countries like the UK and New Zealand being informed about the investigations into alleged threats against the South Asian community in Canada.
