President Biden is set to celebrate Diwali with a special reception honoring the Indian American community.
On October 28, 2024, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host a Diwali celebration, marking the Hindu festival of lights at the White House.
This event is part of the ongoing tradition of celebrating Diwali during his presidency.
The annual reception highlights the administration's dedication to promoting diversity and recognizing the vibrant Indian American community in the United States.
Ceremony to Take Place in the Blue Room of the White House
The festivities will commence in the evening with President Biden lighting a ceremonial Diya lamp in the Blue Room, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. After this meaningful act, he will deliver remarks to the guests, which include notable leaders from the Indian American community, cultural figures, and representatives from various fields.
Adding a unique element to the evening, NASA astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams, a distinguished astronaut and retired Navy Captain, will introduce the President via a video message from the International Space Station (ISS). Williams, who became the ISS Commander in September, is a practicing Hindu and has previously celebrated Diwali during her space missions.
Embracing her Indian heritage, Williams has a history of bringing cultural items to space, such as samosas and sacred texts like the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, as well as an idol of Ganesha, a Hindu deity. Her recorded message will resonate with attendees, showcasing the pride and connection Indian Americans have with their cultural roots, even from the vastness of space.
Showcasing Cultural Art Forms
The event will feature performances by Nootana, a classical South Asian dance and music group based in Washington, D.C. Renowned for their traditional performances, Nootana's artists will present India's rich cultural heritage through expressive dance and music, creating an immersive experience for the guests.
The Marine Corps Band will also perform, infusing an American element into the evening’s entertainment. This combination of cultural and patriotic performances embodies the essence of Diwali as a celebration of unity, diversity, and harmony.
