France High Speed Train Network Disrupted by Malicious Acts

French train operator SNCF reported on Friday that the nation's high-speed rail system has been severely affected by acts of vandalism, including arson, leading to significant disruptions just hours before the 2024 Paris Olympics' opening ceremony.

France's high-speed rail network has been crippled by "malicious acts," including arson attacks, which have caused widespread disruptions, according to train operator SNCF. The incidents come just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

SNCF described the situation as a "massive attack" designed to paralyze the TGV network. The operator indicated that numerous routes would be canceled and that the disruption is expected to persist "at least through the weekend" while repairs are underway.

The SNCF reported that multiple coordinated malicious incidents took place overnight, affecting its Atlantic, northern, and eastern train lines.

The operator reported that "arson attacks were initiated to damage our facilities," leading to "heavy disruptions" in traffic on the affected lines.

While trains are being redirected to alternative routes, many services will still need to be canceled, SNCF added. However, the southeastern line remained unaffected as a planned attack was thwarted.

Passengers are advised to postpone their travel plans and avoid train stations. The timing of the attacks coincides with the final preparations for the Olympics, which will feature 7,500 athletes, 300,000 spectators, and numerous VIPs.
