Precautions and Support Expanded in Response to New Mexico Wildfires

Recent wildfires in New Mexico have prompted expanded measures to support affected residents, including the introduction of Disaster Supplemental Nutritional Program (D-SNAP) benefits. These benefits offer essential groceries for one month to individuals and families impacted by the South Fork and Salt fires.

Srikanth Paladugu, chief of the environmental health epidemiology bureau at the New Mexico Department of Health, emphasized the ongoing risks in wildfire-prone regions due to the state's heightened heat and strong winds. These conditions can exacerbate respiratory issues like asthma in both children and adults.

"In the case of the 2022 Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon fire, we observed a significant increase in emergency room visits compared to the same period in 2021," noted Paladugu.

The 2022 fires marked the largest in New Mexico's history, causing extensive destruction including over 1,400 structures, and 500 homes, and resulting in two fatalities, as reported by state officials. Residents in Lincoln and Otero counties affected by these incidents can begin applying for D-SNAP benefits starting next Wednesday. Additional information is available at 1-800-283-4465.

Paladugu introduced the state's new "531 Visibility Tool," which integrates distance and landmarks to assess visibility during nearby wildfires and determine necessary precautions, such as seeking shelter. This tool is also beneficial for organizers of events, coaches, and recreational leaders in deciding whether outdoor activities should proceed or be postponed.

"For visibility around five miles, it's advisable that young children, adults over 65, pregnant women, and individuals with lung or heart conditions minimize outdoor exposure," advised Paladugu.

He emphasized that individuals experiencing health effects from smoke should take immediate precautions to limit further exposure and seek medical advice promptly.
