Terrorism Threat in Singapore Elevated Since Israel Hamas Conflict: ISD

SINGAPORE:  The Internal Security Department (ISD) of Singapore has reported a heightened terrorism threat since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. The conflict has sparked increased anti-Singapore rhetoric from regional extremists who view Singapore as pro-Israel. Although there is no immediate threat, the ISD emphasizes the importance of vigilance. Singapore’s participation in Operation Prosperity Guardian, an international maritime security mission, has further fueled extremist sentiments, leading to social media calls for attacks against Singapore.

Domestic Self-Radicalisation and Emerging Extremist Threats

The ISD identifies self-radicalisation as a significant threat within Singapore, with 52 cases documented since 2015, including several involving young people. The recent Israel-Hamas conflict has triggered new cases of radicalization, highlighting the danger of foreign extremist narratives. Additionally, the ISD points out the rising concern of far-right extremism (FRE) in Singapore, in line with global trends of increased non-white participation in these movements. The agency warns that youths are particularly susceptible to these ideologies, which can further polarize communities and deepen societal divisions.

Terrorism Financing and Global Attacks Related to the Israel-Hamas Conflict

Terrorism financing continues to be a major concern, with the ISD noting the ongoing use of cash couriers and informal transfer systems by ISIS and its affiliates. While there have been no recent prosecutions, Singapore’s status as a financial hub poses inherent risks. The ISD highlights the exploitation of the Israel-Hamas conflict for terrorism financing, especially through charities. Globally, the conflict has incited various hate crimes and attacks, underscoring its extensive impact on terrorism and radicalization. The ISD urges vigilance and careful consideration of donation channels to ensure that support does not inadvertently fund terrorism.
