Powerful 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan, Tsunami Advisory Issued

Japan: A strong earthquake hit Japan's southern coast on Thursday, leading to a tsunami advisory. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 and was centered off the eastern coast of Kyushu, Japan's southern main island, at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers. The agency issued a tsunami advisory, forecasting waves up to one meter (3.3 feet) along Kyushu's southern coast and the nearby island of Shikoku.

Nuclear plant operators in Kyushu and Shikoku are currently inspecting their facilities for any potential damage. According to Japan's NHK public television, there have been reports of broken windows at Miyazaki airport, located near the quake's epicenter.

Japan is highly susceptible to earthquakes due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region encircled by numerous seismic faults in the Pacific Ocean. This latest quake follows a deadly earthquake in Japan's north-central Noto region on January 1, which resulted in over 240 fatalities.
