Security Guard Fatally Shot in Portland Incident, Teen Wounded

PORTLAND, Ore. — A shooting early Sunday morning in Portland resulted in the death of a man and injuries to a teenager, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

Police reported that multiple gunshots were fired shortly after 1 a.m. in the vicinity of Southeast 9th Avenue and Ankeny Street, just south of East Burnside Street.

PPB officers arrived at the scene to find two individuals injured: 49-year-old Walter E. Mulberry of Portland, who later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, and a 17-year-old boy who is expected to recover, according to police.

Initial findings from the investigation indicate that Mulberry was on duty as a security guard when the shooting occurred. The medical examiner determined his death as a homicide due to gunshot wounds, PPB stated.

The gunfire also struck parked cars and other objects in the area. PPB noted that the assailant or assailants appeared to have fired from a moving vehicle towards a group on the sidewalk. By the time officers arrived, the suspects had fled, and no arrests have been made. PPB has not released any information regarding the suspects.

As part of the ongoing investigation, several blocks surrounding Southeast 9th Avenue and Ankeny Street were temporarily closed.

Detectives investigating the case believe that many witnesses may have left the scene before police arrived. Individuals present during the incident who have not yet spoken with law enforcement are encouraged to contact Detective Jeff Pontius at Jeffery.
