Delaware Teen Makes History as First Miss Teen USA Contestant with Down Syndrome

Amidst summer breaks, one Delaware teen is diligently preparing for the upcoming Miss Teen USA competition in August.

Kayla Kosmalski, who recently graduated from Middletown High School, has already made waves by becoming the first contestant with Down syndrome to win the title of Miss Delaware Teen USA.

Reflecting on her journey, Kayla remarked, "I think it's amazing," as she embraces her role as a trailblazer in the pageant world. Her passion for pageantry began at the age of five, culminating in her recent achievement in April.

"I was shocked. I was happy," she shared. "I wanted to cry but I didn't want to cry."

Advocating for individuals with Down syndrome has become Kayla's primary focus, keeping her engaged with interviews and public appearances. She proudly represents Hearts of Joy as an ambassador, having already shared her message in New York City through speeches and events.

Looking ahead to the national stage in August, Kayla is poised to make history once again as the first contestant with Down syndrome to compete in the Miss Teen USA competition.

"I love to do activewear, which is my favourite thing ever," she enthused. "I bring the sass! I bring the energy!"

Her determination and enthusiasm are palpable as she continues to inspire others and break barriers, including making the cheerleading team at West Chester University, where she will begin college.

"I just love to show the world that people with disabilities can do anything," she affirmed. "If they can follow their dreams and just keep on shining."
