Singapore: A 28-year-old Indian-origin man, Visnu Suriamurthi, received a six-week jail sentence and an SGD 2,000 fine in Singapore on Friday.

Visnu admitted to charges of voluntarily causing hurt to a rival gang member and participating in illegal gambling, leading to his sentencing.

The incident occurred on August 20, 2023, during a gang clash outside the Concorde Hotel and shopping mall on Orchard Road. The brawl tragically claimed the life of 29-year-old Mohammad Isrrat Mohammad Ismail, who was fatally stabbed multiple times.

Authorities allege that Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, a 30-year-old Indian-origin associate of Visnu, used Ismail's knife against him. Sukumaran has been charged with murder and is currently facing trial.

Police apprehended Visnu at a hospital where he sought medical care for injuries sustained during the fight. Over 10 individuals have been implicated and charged for their involvement in the violent altercation.

The court also took into account Visnu’s history of violent behavior, which included two separate jail terms served in 2022 for similar offenses.

District Judge Ong Luan Tze urged Visnu to reflect on his actions and embrace change. "You are still young," she said. "Think about how you want your future to unfold, and after this case, seriously consider staying away from courtrooms."

This case is part of an ongoing investigation, with legal proceedings continuing against others involved in the brawl.
