Raj Salwan Makes History as Fremonts First Indian American Mayor, Vows to Tackle City Challenges

Northern California, USA: Raj Salwan has made history by becoming Fremont’s first Indian American mayor, a significant moment for the diverse city in Northern California. During the swearing-in ceremony at City Hall on December 10, Salwan reflected on his family’s immigrant journey and committed to tackling the city’s pressing challenges while honoring Fremont’s legacy of resilience and growth.

Salwan secured his victory last month in a closely contested election, defeating former Councilman Vinnie Bacon, who garnered 31 percent of the vote. Other candidates included Rohan Marfatia, with 11.8 percent, and Hui Ng, with 9.8 percent.

The ceremony, attended by family, friends, and a large audience of Indian Americans and local supporters, was a momentous occasion. Salwan’s father administered the oath of office, with his mother, wife, and other family members present.

In his inaugural address, Salwan expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and emphasized the qualities that define Fremont: hope, hard work, resilience, and determination. He stated, “I am deeply honored by your confidence in me and profoundly thankful for the journey that has led to this moment.”

The new mayor’s campaign focused on critical issues, including homelessness, public safety, traffic management, infrastructure development, and addressing climate change. He received broad support from labor organizations and business leaders across the region.

Salwan, who has served on the Fremont City Council for over eight years, first joined in 2013. His extensive experience in local governance and active role in city initiatives have established him as a dedicated leader committed to addressing the needs of the community.

His election marks a milestone for Fremont, reflecting the city’s evolving demographics and the increasing political involvement of its Indian American residents.
