US Honors Manmohan Singh: Architect of Stronger India-US Relations

Chicago, USA: United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has conveyed deep condolences on the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s 13th Prime Minister, acknowledging his significant contributions to fostering a robust partnership between the two nations.

Dr. Singh, who passed away in New Delhi at the age of 92 on December 26, was celebrated by the U.S. Department of State as a principal architect of the strategic alliance between India and the United States.

“Dr. Singh was a steadfast advocate for the U.S.-India partnership. His vision laid the foundation for much of the progress our countries have achieved together over the past two decades,” said Antony Blinken in an official statement.

Blinken emphasized Singh's crucial role in the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement and praised his economic reforms, which accelerated India’s growth. “We mourn his loss and honor his enduring commitment to strengthening ties between our nations,” he added.

The U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) also honored Dr. Singh, describing him as a “distinguished scholar, statesman, and respected leader.” The organization highlighted his transformative economic reforms as Finance Minister in 1991, which opened India’s economy to global markets, and his leadership in advancing the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement in 2007.

Atul Keshap, President of the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), hailed Singh as a central figure in modernizing the bilateral relationship, commending his work in expanding economic, strategic, and technological collaboration between the two democracies.

Sam Pitroda, Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, reflected on Singh’s groundbreaking economic policies in 1991. “Implementing generational reforms takes immense determination. He prioritized dialogue, cooperation, and collective advancement, always working as part of a team,” Pitroda said.

Author Tanvi Madan highlighted Singh’s ability to overcome “the hesitations of history” in strengthening India-U.S. ties. Writing on X, she credited him for making bold decisions to deepen bilateral cooperation.

During his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh led transformative policies that significantly improved millions of lives. USISPF commended his humility, intellectual rigor, and lasting impact, describing him as a “beacon of humility” and a “pillar of modern India.”
