Lake Taupo, Rotorua, New Zealand: A 21-year-old Indian engineering student, Shaurya Sriram, tragically drowned at Lake Taupō on April 5, authorities confirmed. The incident has sparked an outpouring of support, with community groups launching a fundraiser to assist in repatriating his body to India.
Sriram, a student at the University of Auckland, had travelled with friends to Whakamoenga Point, a popular lakeside destination, during the Easter long weekend. While swimming in the lake, he reportedly ventured into deeper waters and began to struggle.
Friends present at the scene quickly pulled him back to shore and attempted resuscitation while emergency services were alerted. He was subsequently transported to Rotorua Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A medical examination confirmed that he passed away shortly after the incident.
Sriram, the only son of a Mumbai-based family, is remembered as a bright and compassionate young individual. The MuthTamil Sangam described his passing as a devastating loss for his family.
To support the grieving parents, the organization has initiated a fundraising campaign to cover repatriation expenses, estimated at approximately $18,000. Members of the Indian community in New Zealand have extended their support, contributing to the ongoing efforts.
Lake Taupō, the largest lake in New Zealand, is widely known for its scenic beauty and recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, and boating. However, authorities have also classified it as a higher-risk inland waterway due to changing conditions and deep waters.
This incident has once again highlighted the importance of water safety, particularly in unfamiliar environments.
