Austin, Texas, USA: The family of 21-year-old Indian-origin student Savitha Shanmugasundaram, who lost her life in a tragic shooting incident on March 1, has announced the launch of an endowed scholarship in her memory at the University of Texas.
A month after her passing, her parents and close friends have come together to continue her vision of expanding access to education for underserved communities. The scholarship aims to support students from Title I schools by providing long-term financial assistance to those who may otherwise lack access to higher education opportunities.
The initiative seeks to raise $500,000, which will be matched by the University of Texas through its Texas Challenge program. This combined effort will create a $1 million endowment, expected to benefit eight to ten students annually.
Speaking about the initiative, her father, Shan Muthian, emphasized that the scholarship would preserve her legacy and reflect her passion for helping underprivileged students. He noted that the program would ensure her vision continues to make a meaningful impact.
Her mother stated that the family remains committed to honoring her memory, describing the scholarship as a way of celebrating her life and values.
Family members and friends highlighted that the initiative mirrors Savitha’s compassion and dedication to supporting others. They expressed hope that the beneficiaries of the scholarship would carry forward her spirit of giving, creating a lasting cycle of positive impact.
The scholarship fund is currently open for donations and will be managed by the university as a permanent endowment, ensuring sustained support for future generations.
