US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti highlighted the vital role of Indian Americans in shaping the United States and advancing U.S.-India relations. Speaking at the American Center in New Delhi, he described the diaspora as a "bridge" strengthening bilateral ties, contributing significantly to culture, economy, and leadership.
Indian Americans, comprising 1.5% of the U.S. population, generate 6% of income tax and hold key positions in healthcare, business, and politics. Garcetti praised their resilience, noting their impact as CEOs, policymakers, and navigators in diplomacy. He also encouraged young Indians to pursue U.S. education, with over 333,000 student visa applications approved last year.
Milan Vaishnav of the Carnegie Endowment underscored the diaspora's rapid growth, with 5.2 million people of Indian origin in the U.S., a 50% increase since 2010. Indian Americans excel in socio-economic metrics, with a median household income of $153,000 and 76% holding college degrees.
Indian Americans are key drivers of U.S.-India relations, leveraging technology, advocacy, and political influence to foster stronger ties. Garcetti concluded by calling them an indispensable force in the American story.
