Indian Grammy Winner Ricky Kej Leads Global Campaign for Lead-Free Communities

New York, USA: "Half of India’s children suffer from lead poisoning, which severely impacts their brain development," he reveals.

Three-time Grammy-winning composer and environmental activist Ricky Kej is dedicated to making a difference beyond his music. Known for his evocative compositions and tireless environmental advocacy, Kej has taken on the cause of lead pollution, a silent but serious global issue. On October 21, during National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, he spearheaded Pure Earth’s 25th Anniversary Benefit in New York. The event marked a milestone in the organization’s two-and-a-half decades of impactful work while underscoring the critical need to address lead pollution.

Held in collaboration with partners like USAID, UNICEF, and First Lady Jill Biden, the benefit brought attention to alarming statistics. According to a recent report from Lancet Planetary Health, lead exposure is responsible for 5.5 million cardiovascular deaths annually and results in a loss of 765 million IQ points in children worldwide. Kej’s role as the event’s host embodied the intersection of his artistic talent and his commitment to activism. "Hosting this benefit was about more than just celebrating past achievements," he explained. "It was about inspiring individuals to understand their role in creating change and supporting Pure Earth’s efforts to prevent lead poisoning worldwide."
