What Does Trumps Victory Mean for India-US Relations, According to PM Modi?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. elections, underscoring the value of the strategic partnership between India and the United States.

On Thursday, PM Modi spoke with Trump in a phone call, praising his significant electoral win. The details of the call were shared by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson during a weekly briefing, who emphasized both nations’ respect for the American people's mandate.

"India celebrates this clear expression of the people’s choice," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated to the media.

According to Jaiswal, PM Modi expressed enthusiasm about working closely with Trump. During their conversation, the two leaders agreed on their shared commitment to improving the lives of their citizens and promoting global peace and prosperity.

Both leaders affirmed the importance of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, emphasizing its role in supporting mutual and global stability and peace.

Modi-Trump Friendship

Modi also reminisced about past engagements with Trump during his first term, notably the 'Howdy Modi' event in Houston and the 'Namaste Trump' event in Ahmedabad. Highlighting their longstanding friendship, Modi shared on social media that he had a "great conversation" with his "friend" Trump.

On Wednesday night, Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter), sharing his excitement about the call: “Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory.”

In a notable comeback, Trump, now 78, secured the presidency as the 47th U.S. President, defeating Democratic opponent Kamala Harris. Trump previously served as the 45th President after his 2016 election victory.

Trump is set to begin his new term on January 25, marking him as the first U.S. President in over a century to secure a non-consecutive term. He had lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, and Harris has served as vice president since January 2021.
