Indian National Detained for Attempted Illegal Export of Aircraft Parts to Russia

An Indian national has been arrested for allegedly conspiring to illegally export U.S. aircraft parts to Russia, according to a statement released by the Justice Department on Tuesday. Authorities claim they successfully thwarted an operation aimed at transporting these critical components from the United States to Russia.

Sanjay Kaushik, a 57-year-old Indian citizen, was taken into custody on May 17. The Justice Department confirmed that charges have been formally filed against him in connection with this case.

The alleged conspiracy occurred amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Kaushik, along with accomplices, reportedly sought to illegally transfer aircraft parts and technology from the U.S. to Russian companies. Prosecutors revealed that the group purchased an Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS), a device essential for navigation and flight control, from a supplier based in Oregon. Exporting such components requires a license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Kaushik is accused of misrepresenting the purpose of the purchase, claiming the parts were intended for an Indian company to be used in civilian helicopters. He allegedly secured the licenses through fraudulent means. However, U.S. authorities intercepted the components before they could leave the country and apprehended Kaushik.

If convicted, Kaushik faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million for each offense.
