Tbilisi, Georgia: In a heartbreaking incident at a ski resort in Georgia, 11 Indian nationals lost their lives due to a suspected carbon monoxide leak. Among the victims were Sameer Kumar, who was about to celebrate his birthday, and a married couple, Ravinder Singh and Gurvinder Kaur. The tragedy occurred above an Indian restaurant in Gudauri, according to family members.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 12 individuals, including one Georgian citizen, died after being exposed to carbon monoxide. Preliminary investigations indicate no signs of violence or external injuries on the bodies, which were discovered on Saturday. Authorities suspect the leak originated from a power generator placed near sleeping quarters after the building’s electricity was shut off.

The Indian government is coordinating with the families of the victims to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased. Officials in Georgia are considering potential charges of "negligent manslaughter" as the investigation continues.

The "Silent Killer"

Carbon monoxide, an odorless and invisible gas, is often referred to as the "silent killer." It results from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Inhaling it inhibits the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, leading to poisoning and, in severe cases, death.

Families Grieve the Loss

BBC Punjabi spoke to relatives of the victims in Punjab, who are devastated by the tragedy. Gurdeep Kumar shared that his younger brother, Sameer, had recently moved to Georgia in search of better job opportunities.

“We last talked to him a day before his birthday,” Gurdeep said. “When we couldn’t reach him on his birthday, we contacted the restaurant owner and learned of the incident.” The family is now appealing to authorities for the swift repatriation of Sameer’s body so they can perform the final rites.

In Sunam village, the family of Ravinder Singh and his wife is mourning their untimely demise. According to Kuldeep Singh Bawa Kainchi, Ravinder’s uncle, the couple had relocated to Georgia in March, having spent over ₹1.3 million to build a better future.

Gudauri: A Popular Tourist Spot

Gudauri, the location of the tragic incident, is a renowned destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Nestled in the Caucasus Mountains at an altitude of 2,200 meters, the town is about 120 km north of Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. Its history as a trading post dates back to the 19th century, when it played a significant role along the ancient Georgian Military Road linking Russia and Georgia.
