Brazil President Unveils Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva has introduced a global alliance against hunger and poverty, highlighting it as a key initiative during Brazil’s leadership of the Group of 20 (G20) nations. At a ministerial meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Lula criticized the ongoing global hunger crisis, which continues despite sufficient food production. The alliance is set to be officially established at the G20 summit in November and aims to gather resources and knowledge to enhance policies against poverty and inequality.

The new alliance will operate from secretariats in Rome and Brasilia, with Brazil funding half of its operational costs until 2030. This initiative is a testament to Lula's enduring dedication to fighting hunger, inspired by his own experiences of growing up in poverty. As a leading global food exporter, Brazil has a crucial role in the international food supply chain, exporting large quantities of corn, soy, coffee, sugar, beef, and chicken.

The alliance supports the United Nations' sustainable development goals, particularly the objective of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. Despite some progress, the annual State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report reveals that 733 million people experienced hunger in 2023, a situation worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to tackling hunger and poverty, Brazil's G20 presidency is also pushing for reforms in global governance and a shift towards sustainable energy.
