Maine Launches Competition to Redesign State Flag with a Classic Twist

This November, Mainers will vote on adopting a new state flag, but first, the design must be chosen.

Open to everyone, the design contest requires submissions to be inspired by the state's original flag, which featured a simple pine tree and a blue star on an off-white background. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced the contest on Friday, with a submission deadline of July 19.

The modern iteration of the 1901-1909 flag gained immense popularity during Maine's bicentennial celebration in 2020, appearing on various merchandise like hats, sweatshirts, and soon license plates. This resurgence influenced lawmakers to pass a bill last year allowing Mainers to vote on replacing the current flag, which showcases the state seal, a lumberjack, a sailor, and the state motto, "Dirigo," meaning "I lead" in Latin, a reference to the north star.

The design selection process was smooth until reports emerged of a similar-looking flag displayed at Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's vacation home. This flag, featuring a pine tree and the phrase "AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN," dates back to the Revolutionary War but has recently been linked to the Christian nationalist movement and false claims about the 2020 presidential election.

At a news conference, Bellows dismissed concerns about the flags' similarities, stating, “This is a delightfully non-partisan debate, and every Maine voter will have their say at the ballot box this fall.

The law mandates Bellows to present the final design. "The Legislature has entrusted me with this responsibility, but it’s not a task I can undertake alone. I encourage every Mainer to submit their design for consideration," she said.
