Atlanta, USA: A U.S. federal agency has decided to revisit the environmental permit for Hyundai Motor's $7.6 billion electric vehicle plant in Georgia. 

According to a report by the Associated Press (AP) on Monday, the Army Corps of Engineers made this decision following a complaint from a conservation group. The group argued that regulators had not adequately assessed the factory's impact on the local water supply.

The agency indicated in a letter on Friday that the state and local economic development agencies involved in securing the project’s 2022 permit did not disclose Hyundai's plan to withdraw up to 25 million liters of water per day from an underground aquifer, which is a crucial drinking water source for local residents.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the plant's water requirements became known after the Georgia Environmental Protection Division reviewed a proposal for four new wells to supply the factory. Consequently, the Army Corps of Engineers announced it would reassess its previous conclusion that the project would have "negligible impacts."

Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America is a dedicated electric vehicle manufacturing facility located in Bryan County, Georgia. The Korean automaker began construction in October 2022 and aims to commence production this October.
