New York, USA: Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has announced his resignation, effective December 13, 2024.

Williams, who brought charges against a former Indian intelligence officer in a high-profile case involving Khalistani separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, described his decision to step down as bittersweet. The case accuses Vikash Yadav, a former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer, of orchestrating a "murder-for-hire" plot targeting Pannun. Nikhil Gupta, an alleged co-conspirator extradited from the Czech Republic earlier this year, is also implicated.

In a statement on November 5, Williams called his role a "privilege" and praised his office's dedication. "It has been an honor of a lifetime to work alongside such committed public servants. The office will continue to uphold its integrity and independence," he said. Edward Y. Kim, currently Deputy U.S. Attorney, will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney after Williams' departure.

The case has garnered international attention due to Pannun's position as the leader of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a banned group advocating for a separate Khalistan state. Known for his outspoken criticism of the Indian government, Pannun has been a controversial figure.

Gupta, who has denied the allegations, is set to appear in court for the next hearing on January 19. Observers note that the case's trajectory may shift with the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Jay Clayton, Trump's nominee to replace Williams, and Pam Bondi, his choice for Attorney General, may influence the Justice Department's stance on this matter, pending Senate confirmations.

Williams' resignation, under the Biden administration, introduces uncertainty into the case’s future. However, in his farewell, he reaffirmed the commitment of the office to its principles: "This office will continue to do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons."
