Indian-Origin Nurse Sojan Joseph Becomes UK MP, Champions NHS Reform

London: Sojan Joseph, a newly elected Labour MP of Indian origin, won a significant victory by securing the traditionally Conservative seat of Ashford in Kent, UK, in the recent general election. A former mental health nurse from Kerala, Joseph brings a background in healthcare and community work, which he believes helped him connect with voters seeking change in the face of economic challenges and struggling public services.

His win has fueled optimism in his constituency, especially with recent investments in the NHS and an increase in the minimum wage, which he sees as a major support for many Indian and migrant workers in the UK.

Joseph's journey to the UK began when he moved from India to work as a nurse for the NHS, eventually settling in Ashford with his family. Initially hesitant, his family now fully supports his transition into politics. He is proud of his Kerala roots and of representing both the Indian community and the NHS in Parliament, highlighting the deep connections between the UK’s health sector and India. Joseph sees his election, alongside other Indian-origin Labour MPs, as a testament to the strengthening ties between the UK and India.
