5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Yunnans Dali Region

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit Dali in Yunnan province early Thursday, with no immediate damage or casualties reported, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). The quake occurred at 4:13 AM local time at a depth of 10 km.

Yunnan is prone to frequent earthquakes due to its position at the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This tectonic activity has caused over 100 earthquakes near Dali in the past five years, including a 6.4 magnitude quake in May 2021.

Regions like Tengchong and the Gaoligong Mountains have a long history of strong seismic activity, with over 70 quakes above magnitude 5. Geological features such as hot springs and old volcanic zones also indicate high underground activity in the region.
