The Canadian government has introduced major changes to immigration regulations under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, effective from January 31. These changes grant more powers to border officials, allowing them to cancel Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETA) and Temporary Resident Visas (TRV). This will significantly impact individuals traveling to Canada for education, employment, or temporary residence, especially Indians. Canada’s immigration and border authorities can now revoke ETAs, TRVs, work permits, and study permits for reasons such as providing false information or having a criminal record. If a visa holder fails to convince officials that they will leave Canada after their visa expires, their permit may also be canceled, preventing them from entering Canadian ports.
Billionaire Elon Musk’s close ties with former U.S. President Donald Trump have led to controversy regarding his Canadian citizenship. A parliamentary petition demanding the cancellation of Musk’s Canadian citizenship has gathered over 1.5 lakh signatures. The petition, filed in the House of Commons on February 28, claims that Musk, who serves as Trump’s advisor and head of the Defense Oversight Joint Enterprise (DOJE), is acting against Canada’s national interests. It urges Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Musk’s Canadian passport and citizenship immediately. By Sunday night, over 1,57,000 people had signed the petition.
Elon Musk obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who is Canadian. However, Trump's stance on Canada has angered many Canadians. Trump’s threats to increase tariffs on Canadian imports and his proposal to merge Canada as the 51st U.S. state have provoked widespread resentment among Canadian citizens.
