From Allies to Adversaries: The Growing Rift Between Donald Trump and Elon Musk

The relationship between former U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk appears to have soured. Once close allies, they are now at odds. Musk, who previously spent his own money to support Trump's presidential win, is now publicly criticizing Trump’s stance on key issues. Reports suggest that differences between the two began even before Musk stepped down from his advisory role. Sources from the White House indicate that five main reasons may have caused this rift.

One major issue is the “Big Tax Break Bill,” which aimed to cut taxes for Americans. Critics, including Musk, argue that it benefited the wealthy by around $450 billion while sidelining welfare programs meant for the poor. Musk called it a “disgusting bill” and strongly opposed it, even tweeting “Kill the Bill.” Trump’s camp, however, believes Musk’s opposition stems from the bill reducing subsidies for electric vehicles. Another point of tension arose when Trump privately met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, bypassing Musk, despite their known rivalry in the AI space.

Further straining ties, the White House began monitoring Musk’s role more closely after he reduced visits post-disagreements with Trump. A new official was assigned to oversee Musk’s duties, reportedly angering him. Within Trump’s party too, Musk's increasing interference in policy matters drew criticism. Consequently, Trump informally reduced Musk’s influence. Musk’s earlier promise to donate $100 million to Trump’s campaign was also quietly shelved due to these conflicts, adding to Trump’s dissatisfaction.
